THINGS TO DO IN THE AREA

The Stewartry, as this area is known,

contains an abundance of things to do

and is an ideal base for activity breaks

and holidays

The area is a mecca for golfers with 29

courses across Dumfries and Galloway from

straightforward 9 hole courses to challenging

18 hole championship links like

Southernness. Colvend Golf club is closest at

around 800m from Springfield.

Most courses allow public access. Others

only with an introduction from your own club.

In high summer it's best to pre-book your tee

off times.

Birdwatching enthusiasts are spoilt for choice

in this area. There are official RSBP reserves

at Caerlaverock, Mersehead and Ken/Dee

Marshes with further viewing areas further

afield. In addition there is a feeding station for

red kites near Castle Douglas.

guide to local RSPB reserves

Galloway Kite Trail

Why not bring your bicycles or mountain bikes.

There are lots of by-roads in the area which

remain relatively traffic free. In addition we

have two locations of the 7Stanes forest trails

at Mabie and Dalbeattie Forest. These provide

off road trails of varying difficulty.

For those of you who prefer walking there is

plenty of routes starting at or around

Springfield. There are coastal walks,

woodland walks and for those of a slightly

more energetic nature there are hill walks. Full

details are available at the B & B.

There is also horse riding/pony trekking

available locally and at Loch Ken there is a

water sports centre with canoeing, sailing, jet

skis, water skiing and the like.

If your interest is not covered here please ask

and we will try to find out the availability in

this area.

Of course you can explore the area by car and

sample the best of this beautiful and relatively

unspoilt area.

Dumfries & Galloway is famous for its

scenery. The region has a coastline stretching

over 200 miles with sandy beaches, rocky

headlands and flat merses. There is lush

countryside, rolling hills, tranquil freshwater

lochs, secluded sandy bays and pebble

beaches, tumbling streams and meandering

rivers, woodlands and wetlands teeming with

wildlife and with clear views and dramatic

sunsets
